CGPA to Percentage: CBSE, VTU and University Formulas Explained

CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is a 10-point average of your grades across semesters, while percentage is the familiar out-of-100 score. The two aren't interchangeable by a single universal formula — different boards and universities define their own conversion, which is exactly why so many students get a slightly different number depending on which formula they use.

CGPA, SGPA and percentage — what's the difference?

• SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) — the credit-weighted average of grade points for one semester only.
• CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) — the credit-weighted average across all semesters completed so far.
• Percentage — CGPA converted to a familiar out-of-100 figure, using your board or university's official formula.

The formulas that actually differ

• CBSE: Percentage = CGPA × 9.5. This is the most widely quoted formula and applies to CBSE school results.
• VTU and several technical universities: Percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 — a noticeably different result from the CBSE formula for the same CGPA.
• Other universities: many publish their own multiplier or offset — always check your institution's official examination cell circular if the two common formulas don't match what your marksheet states.
