How to Recover a Deleted WhatsApp Message
Someone deleted a message before you could read it, or you accidentally deleted your own chat history — here's what's actually recoverable, and how.

"Delete for me" only removes the message from your own device — the sender and any other recipients still have it. "Delete for everyone" removes it from all devices, but only within a short time window after sending.
If a message was "deleted for everyone" before you read it
On Android, if you have notification history enabled (Settings → Notifications → Notification history), a deleted message's content is often still visible there, since it captured the notification before deletion. On iPhone, there's no equivalent built-in feature — Apple's notification history doesn't retain content the same way, so a message deleted for everyone before you saw it is generally unrecoverable on iOS through official means.

If you deleted your own chat history
- Check for a chat backup: WhatsApp Settings → Chats → Chat Backup shows your last backup date.
- If a Google Drive (Android) or iCloud (iPhone) backup exists from before the deletion, reinstalling WhatsApp and restoring from that backup brings the chat back.
- Restoring overwrites your current chat history with the backup's state, so anything sent or received after that backup date will be lost in the restore.
What genuinely isn't recoverable
- A message deleted for everyone, read before deletion, but with no backup and no notification history — the content is gone
- Media (photos, videos) that were never backed up and have since been deleted from your device's storage
- Anything from a chat where auto-delete or disappearing messages were enabled, once the timer expires
Preventing this going forward
Turn on regular chat backups in WhatsApp settings, and consider that notification history (Android) or a habit of not immediately archiving important conversations gives you a safety net if a message gets deleted before you fully read it.
