Udyam Registration is the official government recognition for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in India. It's free, entirely paperless, and based on self-declaration using just your Aadhaar and PAN — no physical documents to upload or verify in person. Once registered, your business unlocks access to a range of government schemes, subsidies and priority lending benefits reserved specifically for recognised MSMEs.

Why bother registering

  • Priority sector lending and typically easier access to business loans from banks
  • Protection against delayed payments from buyers, with a defined legal recourse
  • Eligibility for various central and state MSME subsidy schemes
  • Concessions on trademark and patent registration fees
  • Easier participation in government tenders, some of which reserve a portion for MSMEs

Step-by-step: register on Udyam

  1. Visit the official Udyam portal (udyamregistration.gov.in) — this is the only legitimate source; be wary of lookalike sites charging a fee.
  2. Choose "New Registration for MSME" and verify with Aadhaar OTP (the proprietor's Aadhaar for a proprietorship, or the authorised signatory's for other business types).
  3. Enter and validate your PAN.
  4. Fill in self-declared business details — activity type, investment and turnover figures, bank details.
  5. Submit and download your Udyam Registration Certificate, which carries a unique Udyam Registration Number.
Udyam registration is entirely free on the official government portal. Several third-party sites mimic its design and charge a "registration fee" — never pay for something the government provides free.

Micro, small, or medium — which category?

Classification depends on your business's investment in plant/machinery or equipment and its annual turnover, with thresholds that get progressively higher for micro, small and medium categories. The portal calculates your category automatically from the figures you self-declare, so you don't need to work this out manually beforehand — just have your approximate investment and turnover numbers ready.

After you're registered

Once your Udyam certificate is issued, keep the Udyam Registration Number handy — you'll need it when applying for MSME loan schemes, government tenders reserved for small businesses, and when raising GST invoices where mentioning MSME status can matter for the buyer's payment-timeline obligations under MSME law. Update your figures on the portal periodically as your turnover changes, since staying in the correct category keeps you eligible for the right tier of benefits.

Frequently asked questions

It's not legally mandatory to operate, but without it you can't access MSME-specific benefits like priority lending, subsidy schemes, and delayed-payment protection — most businesses that qualify register specifically for these advantages.
