Stacked Discounts Explained: Why 25% + 10% Off Isn't 35% Off

"25% off, plus an extra 10%" sounds like 35% off. It's actually about 32.5% — and the gap gets bigger the larger the discounts get.

"Flat 25% off, plus an extra 10% off at checkout" is a common sale pattern, and it's easy to mentally add the two numbers and assume it's 35% off. It isn't. Stacked discounts multiply, they don't add — and once you see why, the actual saving is quick to work out in your head.

Why discounts multiply instead of adding

The first discount applies to the original price. The second discount applies to what's left after the first one — not to the original price again. Once you take 25% off, you're left with 75% of the original. The extra 10% then comes off that reduced 75%, not off the full amount. Those two reductions compound, and compounding two discounts is never quite as large as their sum.

A worked example

Take a ₹2,000 item. 25% off brings it to ₹1,500 (you saved ₹500). Now apply the extra 10% — but 10% of ₹1,500, not ₹2,000 — which is ₹150, bringing the final price to ₹1,350. Total saved: ₹650 out of ₹2,000, which is 32.5% off, not 35%. The gap — 2.5 percentage points here — is the cost of the naive "just add them" assumption.

The general pattern

For two discounts, the actual combined saving is: 1 − (1 − first%) × (1 − second%). For 25% and 10%, that's 1 − (0.75 × 0.90) = 1 − 0.675 = 0.325, or 32.5%. Notice the naive sum (35%) is always higher than the real combined discount — stacking never quite delivers what it sounds like it promises, and the gap grows as the individual discounts get larger.

Try it with two large discounts, like 50% + 50% — it sounds like 100% off (free), but the real combined saving is 1 − (0.5 × 0.5) = 75% off. The bigger the individual discounts, the bigger the gap between the sticker-math number and the real one.

Why retailers use this framing

Splitting a discount into two smaller stacked numbers — instead of just advertising the single combined percentage — reliably reads as a bigger deal to a shopper doing quick mental math. That's not necessarily dishonest (the individual numbers are usually accurate), but it does mean the headline framing tends to overstate the real saving by design, not by accident.
