What Is Color Blindness, and How Do You Design For It?

Roughly 1 in 12 men have some form of color vision deficiency — here's what it actually looks like, and how to check your own designs against it.

Color blindness — more accurately, color vision deficiency — affects roughly 8% of men and 0.5% of women of Northern European descent, with somewhat different rates across other populations. It's common enough that any design relying purely on color to convey meaning (a red vs. green status indicator, for instance) will genuinely fail for a meaningful slice of users.

The main types

  • Deuteranopia — reduced sensitivity to green light; the most common form, affecting around 6% of men.
  • Protanopia — reduced sensitivity to red light; roughly 1% of men.
  • Tritanopia — reduced sensitivity to blue light; rare, affecting far fewer people.
  • Achromatopsia — complete color blindness, seeing only in grayscale; very rare.

How to check your own designs

The single most common accessibility mistake is a red/green pairing to mean "error" vs "success" with no other distinguishing signal — this is exactly the pairing deuteranopia and protanopia struggle with most.

Practical fixes that actually work

Never rely on color alone — pair it with an icon, a label, a pattern, or a position. A red X and green checkmark communicate the same status as red and green alone, but remain clear regardless of color vision. Increasing contrast and choosing color pairs that differ in brightness as well as hue (not just red vs. green, but also how light or dark each one is) helps across nearly every type of color vision deficiency at once.

Accessible color choices aren't just a checkbox for a compliance audit — a chart or dashboard that only works for typical color vision quietly fails for a real, sizeable share of any large user base.
