What is the Digital Rupee?

How to actually use the Digital Rupee today
Access is currently provided through participating banks' dedicated Digital Rupee apps (rather than a single unified RBI app) — a user opens a digital rupee wallet through a participating bank, loads it (converting regular bank balance into e₹ tokens), and can then transact with other e₹ wallet holders, or with merchants who've enabled e₹ acceptance, using the wallet app's own QR-code-based payment flow, similar in day-to-day feel to a UPI payment even though the underlying settlement mechanism is fundamentally different.
Is the Digital Rupee the same as cryptocurrency?
No — and this is a critical, common point of confusion given how much both terms get discussed in the same "digital money" conversations. A cryptocurrency like Bitcoin is decentralized, issued by no central authority, with its value determined purely by market demand and no sovereign backing at all.
