PAN (Permanent Account Number) is a 10-character number from the Income Tax Department. It's tied to your financial and tax identity — filing returns, high-value transactions, opening certain accounts and investments.

- Issued by: Aadhaar → UIDAI; PAN → Income Tax Department.
- Main purpose: Aadhaar → identity & address proof; PAN → taxes & finance.
- Format: Aadhaar → 12 digits; PAN → 10 characters (letters + digits).
- Who needs it: Aadhaar → all residents; PAN → anyone with taxable income or major financial activity.
Do they need to be linked?
Yes. Linking PAN with Aadhaar is mandatory for most taxpayers — an unlinked PAN can become inoperative. See our step-by-step PAN–Aadhaar link guide.
