- Keep your PAN and Aadhaar numbers handy.
- Make sure your name and date of birth match on both — a mismatch is the most common reason linking fails.
- Have your mobile number ready for OTP.

Step-by-step: link PAN with Aadhaar
- Go to the official Income Tax e-filing portal (incometax.gov.in).
- Open 'Link Aadhaar' under Quick Links on the home page.
- Enter your PAN and Aadhaar number.
- If a late fee applies, pay it first via 'e-Pay Tax', then come back and submit the link request.
- Submit and note the confirmation.
How to check PAN–Aadhaar link status
On the same portal, open 'Link Aadhaar Status', enter your PAN and Aadhaar, and it will tell you whether they're already linked or the request is still being processed.
What if my PAN is already inoperative?
You can still link it by paying the applicable late fee; the PAN generally becomes operative again within a few days of a successful request. Fix any name/DOB mismatch first, then retry.
