Barcode vs QR Code: What's the Difference and When to Use Which
Both get scanned, but a barcode and a QR code store completely different amounts of information — picking the wrong one is a common, avoidable mistake.
Barcodes and QR codes both encode data a scanner can read, but they were built for different jobs — a barcode is a thin strip of a handful of digits, while a QR code is a dense grid that can hold entire URLs, contact cards or WiFi credentials. Picking the wrong one usually shows up later, when the format can't hold what you actually need.
What each one can actually store
A traditional 1D barcode (like UPC or EAN, the kind on retail packaging) typically encodes a short numeric string — usually a product identifier, nothing more. A QR code is a 2D matrix that can hold up to a few thousand characters, enough for a full URL, a vCard contact, a WiFi network's SSID and password, or plain text — which is why QR codes handle marketing and information-sharing use cases that a barcode simply can't.

Where each one is the right choice
- Barcode — retail products, inventory and warehouse tracking, anywhere you're plugging into an existing point-of-sale or barcode-scanner system that expects a short numeric code.
- QR code — marketing (linking to a website, menu or social profile), WiFi sharing, payments, event check-in, or any case where you need to encode more than a short number.
Scanning requirements differ too
Barcodes need a fairly precise, straight-on scan and a dedicated or well-calibrated scanner for best results. QR codes are built with error correction and can be read reliably from an angle, at a distance, or even partially damaged, by any modern phone camera — no dedicated hardware required. That built-in error correction is also why you can safely place a logo in the center of a QR code without breaking its scannability.
Making either one
For a QR code, pick the content type (URL, WiFi, vCard, plain text and more), style it with your brand colors and an optional logo, then export as PNG, SVG or PDF. For a barcode, choose the symbology your system expects (UPC-A, EAN-13, Code 128 and others are commonly supported) and generate a scannable, print-ready code.
