BMI Explained: What It Actually Measures (and What It Doesn't)
BMI is a single number from a simple formula — useful for a quick, population-level screen, and easy to over-read as more than that for any one individual.

It's actually a very simple formula — weight divided by height squared — designed in the 1830s as a population statistic, not an individual health assessment. Knowing what it does and doesn't capture makes it far more useful, and far less alarming or reassuring than it can feel in isolation.
What the formula actually calculates
BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)². That's the entire calculation — two measurements, no adjustment for anything else about the person. The output is compared against broad bands: under 18.5 is categorized underweight, 18.5–24.9 healthy, 25–29.9 overweight, 30+ obese. Those bands were set from population-level health outcome data, not from any individual assessment.

What it doesn't account for
- Muscle vs fat — the formula can't distinguish them. A muscular athlete can register as "overweight" by BMI despite having low body fat, because muscle is denser than fat and BMI only sees total weight.
- Where fat is distributed — two people with identical BMI can have very different health risk if one carries more visceral (abdominal) fat, which BMI has no way to detect.
- Age and sex differences — body composition at the same BMI genuinely differs between a 25-year-old and a 65-year-old, and between men and women, none of which the formula adjusts for.
- Bone density and frame size — a naturally larger or denser frame shifts BMI upward without reflecting anything about body fat.
Why it's still so widely used
For all its limitations at the individual level, BMI correlates reasonably well with health outcomes across large populations, and it only needs a scale and a tape measure to calculate — no lab test, no special equipment, no cost. That combination of cheap, fast and directionally useful at scale is exactly why it became the default screening number in medicine and public health, even though it was never intended as a precise individual diagnostic.
A more directly useful number: your healthy weight range
Rather than a single BMI figure, it's often more actionable to know the healthy weight range for your actual height — the range of weights that correspond to a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 for you specifically. That range gives a concrete target in kilograms or pounds instead of an abstract index number, which is usually what people actually want to know when they check their BMI in the first place.
