How to Apply for Passport Renewal in India: Step-by-Step

Renewing an expiring or expired Indian passport is a different flow from a fresh application — here's exactly what changes and what to prepare.

Renewing an Indian passport uses the same Passport Seva portal as a fresh application, but the form flow, required documents and processing details differ depending on how long ago your passport expired.

When you can use the simpler renewal process

If your passport expired within the last year, you can generally use the standard reissue process without the additional requirements that apply to long-expired passports. If it's been expired for longer, some Passport Seva Kendras may treat the application closer to a fresh one, potentially asking for additional documents or verification — check the current requirements for your specific case on the official portal before booking your appointment.

Documents to prepare

  • Your existing (expiring or expired) passport, original and self-attested copy of the first and last pages
  • Proof of address, if it's changed since your last passport was issued
  • A recent passport-size photo meeting the official specifications
  • Aadhaar card as supporting ID proof
  • Any name-change documents (marriage certificate, gazette notification) if applicable

Step-by-step

  1. Log in to the Passport Seva portal and select "Apply for Fresh Passport / Reissue of Passport" — reissue covers renewal.
  2. Fill in the application form, indicating it's a reissue and providing your existing passport details.
  3. Pay the applicable fee online.
  4. Book an appointment at your nearest Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office PSK.
  5. Visit with your original documents for verification and biometric capture.
  6. Track your application status online until the new passport is dispatched.
Photo specifications for the application are strict on size, background and recency — get a compliant photo before your appointment rather than risking a rejection or a reschedule at the counter.

Police verification on renewal

Police verification isn't always required for renewal the way it typically is for a first-time passport — it depends on factors like whether your address has changed and your specific application category. Don't assume either way; the portal will indicate if it applies to your application after you submit the form.

Frequently asked questions

Yes — you can apply for reissue up to a year before expiry (or per the current official window), which is generally advisable to avoid any gap in having a valid passport for travel.
