How to Use DigiLocker to Store Your Documents Digitally

DigiLocker documents are legally valid at par with the originals — here's how to set up your account and start pulling in your official documents.

DigiLocker is a government platform under the Ministry of Electronics & IT that stores digital versions of official documents — Aadhaar, driving licence, vehicle RC, marksheets and more — pulled directly from the issuing authority. The key detail that makes it genuinely useful: documents issued to DigiLocker are legally recognised at par with the physical originals, not just a convenient copy.

Why this matters beyond convenience

Because DigiLocker documents carry the same legal standing as the physical copies, you can show a police officer your driving licence from the DigiLocker app instead of carrying the physical card, or submit a DigiLocker-issued marksheet for a job application instead of a photocopy. It removes the everyday risk of losing or forgetting a physical document you might need on short notice.

Step-by-step: set up your account

  1. Visit the official DigiLocker site (digilocker.gov.in) or install the app.
  2. Sign up using your mobile number, then verify with Aadhaar.
  3. Set a security PIN to protect your account.
  4. Go to "Issued Documents" and search for the department that issued your document (e.g., UIDAI for Aadhaar, your state transport department for a driving licence).
  5. Fetch the document — it's pulled directly from the issuer and stored in your DigiLocker.
Not every document from every department is available yet — coverage depends on whether that specific issuing authority has integrated with DigiLocker. If a document isn't showing up, it may simply not be linked yet rather than a problem with your account.

What you can typically fetch

  • Aadhaar card and PAN verification
  • Driving licence and vehicle registration certificate (RC)
  • Educational marksheets and certificates from participating boards and universities
  • Various state and central government-issued certificates, depending on integration

Sharing documents when you need to

DigiLocker lets you generate a shareable link or QR code for a specific document, so you can hand over exactly one document to whoever needs to verify it — without exposing your entire document locker. This is a meaningfully more controlled way to share than emailing scanned copies or handing over physical originals.

Frequently asked questions

Yes — documents issued to DigiLocker are legally recognised at par with the physical originals under the Information Technology Act, accepted by government offices, police and most institutions.
