How to Renew Your Driving Licence Online in India

A driving licence (DL) in India is valid for 20 years for non-transport vehicles (or until the holder turns 40, if that comes first), and needs to be renewed after that — or earlier for commercial/transport licences, which run on a shorter cycle. Missing the renewal window means driving on an invalid licence, so it's worth tracking the expiry date.

When to renew

You can apply for renewal up to a year before expiry, and up to a year after — beyond that, it's treated as an expired licence and may need a fresh application with a driving test. Renewing before expiry is the simplest path and avoids any lapse.

• A recent passport-size photograph
• Proof of address (if it has changed since your last licence)
