Import Export Code (IEC)

An Import Export Code (IEC) is required for businesses and individuals looking to import or export goods commercially from India. It's issued by the DGFT, is linked to the applicant's PAN, and must be confirmed/updated online every year even if no details have changed.

Frequently asked questions

Since IEC issuance is linked to PAN, the IEC number is generally the same as the applicant's PAN, though it's still a distinct registration/certificate.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • • Not updating/confirming IEC details annually, leading to deactivation
  • • Applying with mismatched PAN and business name details
  • • Providing an inactive bank account or mismatched bank certificate
  • • Assuming an IEC is required for all imports, including small personal purchases
