Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY)

Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) provides free LPG gas connections to women from below-poverty-line (BPL) and other specified eligible households, replacing polluting cooking fuels like firewood and kerosene with clean cooking gas. Eligible beneficiaries get a new LPG connection with the security deposit waived, and can apply through any participating LPG distributor.

Frequently asked questions

The security deposit and connection cost are waived for eligible beneficiaries, but subsequent gas refills are paid for at the applicable rate — the scheme covers the connection itself, not free refills indefinitely.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • • Applying without checking eligibility category first
  • • Submitting an incomplete KYC form
  • • Assuming refills are free after the initial connection

PM Ujjwala Yojana covers the LPG connection deposit for eligible low-income households — but the connection itself isn't the whole cost, and misunderstanding what's actually free versus what you keep paying for is where most confusion about the scheme comes from.
